When the team behind Lyla Toronto was designing the private dining room, they made a choice most designers would second-guess. Nearly every surface: pitch black, rough textured, nothing competing for attention. Then one backlit translucent panel at the head of the table.
The panel is Lucques, from the Lumi-Onyx Alabaster collection. Warm beige with fine parallel striations and deep brown channel lines. In daylight it reads as a composed, linear surface. In a dark room with LED backlighting behind it, it becomes the room’s only light source.
That contrast is the whole brief. The darkness makes the panel. The panel justifies the darkness. Neither works without the other.
It’s a useful reminder for specifiers working on intimate hospitality spaces: backlit panels don’t need to compete with ambient light to perform. They perform better without it. A single full-height panel in a controlled environment will do more work than a feature wall in a brightly lit lobby.
Lucques is available translucent or opaque, in glossy or satin finish, on acrylic or polycarbonate substrate. Lead time is 10 to 15 business days. No minimum order quantity.
